Retaining Walls in San Jose
A retaining wall holds grade so a yard, path, or fence can sit level. Meza's Fence builds wood-and-concrete stem walls, capped block walls, and walls that meet a privacy fence for San Jose and South Bay homes. Family-owned since 2001. Licensed .
What it is and who it is for
This page is for lots where soil needs to be stepped or held so a fence or planting bed can work — including hillside and foothill-edge yards in Almaden, Evergreen, Los Gatos, and similar South Bay grades.
Who it is for: owners who already have a drop in the yard, a failing short wall, or a fence that needs a stem to sit on. For the fence itself see redwood fences.
Options
Typical builds: capped masonry or block walls, concrete stems under wood fences, and stepped walls that break a long grade into shorter lifts. Residential heights are usually in the 2–4 foot range for planter and stem walls; taller structural walls are quoted after we see drainage and the load above. Photographed and stock reference work on this page shows capped walls, walls with a fence above, and stepped grade.
What changes the price (why we estimate on site)
South Bay fence and deck numbers are ranges, not a flat catalog price. These are the variables that decide where your job lands. That is why the free on-site estimate matters.
- Landscape and site conditions: Hard ground, rocks, steep grades, turf, vines, boulders, or trees that force hand work instead of machinery.
- Underground obstacles: Irrigation, electrical lines, or old concrete. Common in neighborhoods such as Country Club and Almaden Valley.
- Material selection: Standard boards versus premium heartwood or high-end composites such as Trex.
- Project scope: Linear footage for fences, square footage for decks, and how much tear-out is needed.
- Design complexity: Standard good-neighbor or picket lines versus custom horizontal or modern designs.
- Gates: Walk gates are typically about 42 inches. Driveway gates are often about 10 feet; RV openings near 14 feet often need a metal frame so the leaf does not sag.
- Regulatory factors: City permits (for example San Jose side/rear fences over 6 feet plus 1 foot of lattice usually need review), and city business licenses where required.
Price guidance
Retaining walls are quoted by length, height, material, and drainage — not a flat per-foot catalog price. Grade, rock, and whether a fence sits on the wall change the bid. Ask for a free on-site estimate. We reply within one business day.

Grade, drainage, and the fence above
The capped-wall photo is a finished top. The wall-with-fence photo is a stem that a privacy line sits on. Stepped walls break a long grade into more than one lift. Those are the wall patterns we build most often on South Bay lots.
Water has to go somewhere. If the yard already puddles at the bottom of the drop, say so and photograph it. If a neighbor’s yard is higher, photograph that too. Send the city, a wide shot, top and bottom of the drop, and any existing fence on the line. HEIC is accepted.
Family-owned since 2001. Licensed, bonded, Diamond Certified, BBB A+ since 2008. If the wall is only there so a new good-neighbor fence can sit level, start the form with both needs in the message so the bid is one project.
Questions
Do you build retaining walls in San Jose?
Yes. We build capped walls, concrete stems under fences, and stepped walls for South Bay lots including Almaden and other hillside grades.
Do I need a wall and a fence?
Often yes when a privacy line sits on a drop. Send photos of the grade and we will bid wall and fence together when that is the right approach.
How do I get a bid?
Free estimate. Response within one business day. Include top and bottom photos of the drop.
