Stained horizontal good neighbor fence by Meza's Fence

Good Neighbor Fences in San Jose

A good neighbor fence is a boundary fence finished so both yards get a clean face. Meza's Fence builds these privacy lines for San Jose homes. The company has been family-owned since 2001, licensed , and answers estimates within one business day.

What it is and who it is for

Most San Jose side and rear lots want height and privacy without handing the neighbor a wall of exposed rails. A good neighbor design puts boards so each side reads as a finished fence. Photos on this site show a six-foot run, a piano-key board pattern, and a horizontal stained line. Those are real jobs.

This page is for owners who share a property line, who want both families to live with the result, and who need a fence that is a structure, not a one-sided screen. If the fence is in the front setback, use the front yard page. For the lumber itself, see redwood fences.

Options

The most popular good neighbor style is board-on-board at 6 feet. Photographed jobs also include piano-key patterns and horizontal boards. In San Jose, many side/rear lines can use 6 feet of solid fence plus 1 foot of lattice without a permit; confirm your lot with the city.

Price guidance

For standard fencing in San Jose and the South Bay, jobs typically start at $42–$75 per linear foot. Typical San Jose / South Bay fence range. Final price depends on landscape, materials, scope, design, gates, and permits.

Neighborhoods with harder digs or older utilities, including Country Club and Almaden, often move toward the higher end of the range. Send photos and the property address for a free estimate. We reply within one business day.

What changes the price (why we estimate on site)

South Bay fence and deck numbers are ranges, not a flat catalog price. These are the variables that decide where your job lands. That is why the free on-site estimate matters.

  • Landscape and site conditions: Hard ground, rocks, steep grades, turf, vines, boulders, or trees that force hand work instead of machinery.
  • Underground obstacles: Irrigation, electrical lines, or old concrete. Common in neighborhoods such as Country Club and Almaden Valley.
  • Material selection: Standard boards versus premium heartwood or high-end composites such as Trex.
  • Project scope: Linear footage for fences, square footage for decks, and how much tear-out is needed.
  • Design complexity: Standard good-neighbor or picket lines versus custom horizontal or modern designs.
  • Gates: Walk gates are typically about 42 inches. Driveway gates are often about 10 feet; RV openings near 14 feet often need a metal frame so the leaf does not sag.
  • Regulatory factors: City permits (for example San Jose side/rear fences over 6 feet plus 1 foot of lattice usually need review), and city business licenses where required.

Sharing a boundary fence in California

California Civil Code section 841 addresses adjoining owners and boundary fences. In plain terms, neighbors who share the benefit of a boundary fence are generally expected to share reasonable costs after proper written notice. You have rights under that statute to give notice and ask for a fair split. This is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. Read the current statute or talk to counsel before you send a notice.

A notice letter is not a court filing. Keep a copy. If the neighbor disagrees, talk to a lawyer who handles neighbor-fence matters. Meza's Fence builds the fence; we do not represent you in a dispute.

Dear Neighbor,

I am writing about the boundary fence between our properties at [your address] and [neighbor address]. I propose to [build / replace] a good neighbor fence along the shared line. I will send a contractor estimate when I have one.

  • ★★★★★

“The whole process with Meza's Fence was great and I'd highly recommend them. I found them through Yelp and communication was good- they were quick to come out and help provide an estimate to replace the fence shared with my neighbor. After finalizing the details on our redwood fence project, they came and completed our fence project in the timeline promised. They did an excellent job removing the old fence and left the area clean.”

  • Angi ★★★★★

“Excellent. Came on time, did the work exactly according to the quote, and cleaned up nicely. Got a couple of quotes and theirs was most reasonable and their quote package provided the most information. In the pricing, note that this was the total cost for fence and gate. I split with my neighbor, but for this survey I have added the two amounts together to get the total.”

“Use them, any time anyone asks, I always recommend Meza's. I've used them two times now and the neighbors were always satisfied as well. I plan on using them a third time soon.”

Bring the neighbor into the conversation early. A fence that looks finished from both sides is easier to live with than a one-faced wall. Send the city, approximate length, and photos of the existing line if there is one.

Working the line from both yards

A good neighbor fence is a shared object even when only one household pays the invoice. The photograph of the six-foot run on this page is a closed face; the piano-key and horizontal jobs show that “good neighbor” is a way of boarding, not a single pattern. If you want the same face on both sides, say that in the message. If you and a neighbor already agreed on height, write the height. Do not ask this page to pick a height for a street we have not seen.

The notice letter above is a template. It is not legal advice and it is not a Meza form. Read the current text of Civil Code section 841, or have counsel read it, before you send anything. We build the fence after the households decide to proceed. We do not serve the notice for you and we do not mediate a dispute.

Access matters. A rear line with no side yard can mean boards come over a gate or through a house. Mention that. Pets, irrigation, and a slope at the line should be in the photos. Up to six images, including HEIC. The estimate form is the only form on this site; service pages do not collect leads themselves.

Meza's Fence is a San Jose company at the South 10th Street shop. The service area is San Jose and Santa Clara County. We do not claim a second office in a neighborhood. If you want the fence to meet a new gate or a short wall, link those needs in the same request so the bid is one job, not three surprises.
