Redwood privacy fence installation by Meza's Fence

Redwood Fence Installation in San Jose

A redwood fence is the default request we hear from San Jose homeowners who want wood that belongs in this climate. Meza's Fence has built redwood fences from the San Jose shop since 2001. The crew works from 1750 S 10th St and answers estimate requests within one business day.

What a redwood fence is

Redwood is a western lumber used for fences because it resists rot better than many common construction woods when it is detailed and finished correctly. Boards can be left to weather, stained, or sealed. On San Jose lots the fence is usually a privacy screen along a side or rear property line, or a lower picket line in the front where sight lines matter.

Who it is for: owners who want a wood fence rather than vinyl or chain link, who care how the board faces look from both yards, and who expect the fence to be framed and set as a lasting structure, not a weekend panel kit. If you share a line with a neighbor, start on the good neighbor page as well. If the fence faces the street, see front yard fences.

How these jobs usually look

Most popular redwood styles we build: horizontal privacy lines and good neighbor board-on-board runs. Photographs on this site also show stained picket fronts, solid board privacy lines, and fences that meet custom gates or arbors. Those are real Meza jobs. See also good neighbor fences and front yard fences.

Price guidance

For standard fencing in San Jose and the South Bay, jobs typically start at $42–$75 per linear foot. Typical San Jose / South Bay fence range. Final price depends on landscape, materials, scope, design, gates, and permits.

Neighborhoods with harder digs or older utilities, including Country Club and Almaden, often move toward the higher end of the range. Send photos and the property address for a free estimate. We reply within one business day.

What changes the price (why we estimate on site)

South Bay fence and deck numbers are ranges, not a flat catalog price. These are the variables that decide where your job lands. That is why the free on-site estimate matters.

  • Landscape and site conditions: Hard ground, rocks, steep grades, turf, vines, boulders, or trees that force hand work instead of machinery.
  • Underground obstacles: Irrigation, electrical lines, or old concrete. Common in neighborhoods such as Country Club and Almaden Valley.
  • Material selection: Standard boards versus premium heartwood or high-end composites such as Trex.
  • Project scope: Linear footage for fences, square footage for decks, and how much tear-out is needed.
  • Design complexity: Standard good-neighbor or picket lines versus custom horizontal or modern designs.
  • Gates: Walk gates are typically about 42 inches. Driveway gates are often about 10 feet; RV openings near 14 feet often need a metal frame so the leaf does not sag.
  • Regulatory factors: City permits (for example San Jose side/rear fences over 6 feet plus 1 foot of lattice usually need review), and city business licenses where required.

San Jose height note

For many San Jose side and rear lots, a common legal maximum without a permit is 6 feet of solid fence plus 1 foot of lattice (7 feet total). Front-yard rules are lower. Confirm your lot with the city before you order boards. We will not invent a height for your street.

“The whole process with Meza's Fence was great and I'd highly recommend them. I found them through Yelp and communication was good- they were quick to come out and help provide an estimate to replace the fence shared with my neighbor. After finalizing the details on our redwood fence project, they came and completed our fence project in the timeline promised. They did an excellent job removing the old fence and left the area clean. If you're looking to replace your fence, I'd definitely check out Meza's”

Meza's Fence is Diamond Certified and BBB Accredited A+ since 2008. Read more on the reviews page. The shop serves San Jose and Santa Clara County. Related work: gates, retaining walls, and repair.

A redwood fence on a San Jose lot has to handle dry summers, winter rain, and the way yards here sit close together. Posts, rails, and boards need to be sized for the span and the soil you actually have, not a catalog drawing. That is why we ask for the city, a few photos, and a short note about height and privacy before we talk materials. Licensed .

If you already have a leaning run or failed boards, send photos on the estimate form. Some lines are better replaced than patched; some are not. We will say which once we see the job.

What to send with the estimate

Write the city, the street if you want us to see grade on a map, and whether the fence is a side line, a rear line, or both. Attach up to six photos: a wide shot of the run, the posts, any slope, and the neighbor’s face of the fence if you can take it. HEIC from an iPhone is accepted. We reply within one business day.

San Jose lots are often narrow, with a house close to one side and a driveway on the other. A redwood fence on those lots has to clear gates, meters, and the place where a future deck or wall might land. If you already know you want a gate in the run, say so on the form and we will look at the gates work at the same time. If the line sits on a drop, look at retaining walls before you lock a board height.

The shop does not publish a price list. Material, length, height, and access change the number. Meza's Fence Inc is Diamond Certified, BBB Accredited A+ since 2008, and bonded. The license is on every page of this site. That is the company you are writing to, not a lead broker.

We will not claim a warranty, a job count, or a finish schedule here. Those belong in a written estimate after we see the lot. What you can count on from the facts we have: a San Jose shop since 2001, a one-business-day response, and redwood fence work you can see in the project photos.
